About Dental Implants

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a dental restoration that replaces both the natural tooth’s root and crown. Dental implants can be used to replace an entire dental arch, a few missing teeth, or a single missing tooth. Dental implants are made up of three main components. The first is a titanium screw called the implant post. Next, there is an abutment that attaches to the top of the post. The abutment also attaches to the final implant component, which is the restoration. Depending on how many teeth you are replacing, your restoration may be a complete or partial denture, dental bridge, or dental crown.

What happens during my implant procedure?

Our dentist will begin your implant procedure by inserting the implant post into the site of the missing tooth. If you are replacing an entire dental arch and still have some remaining teeth, our dentist will also remove those teeth and insert four to six implants across the dental arch. After the implant post is inserted, you will have a period of healing, during which the bone will begin to fuse with the implant post. Following this healing period, we will place your abutment and final restoration on top of the post, completing your treatment.

In some implant procedures, the implant post can be placed and the final restoration attached in a single visit. In these cases, the restoration will be made prior to placing the implant post, and it will be attached to the post immediately after the post is inserted into the bone.

Benefits of dental implants

Dental implants are designed to provide the look, feel, and functionality of a natural tooth. Because both the crown and the root are replaced, dental implants provide great stability. This means that you can chew, speak and smile as normal. In addition, maintaining proper oral hygiene can make it possible for your dental implant to last a lifetime.
